Foldy

Privacy

Foldy needs to see your screen to fold it. Here is exactly where those frames go, and what little else leaves your Mac.

Last updated 11 September 2026

Your screen never leaves your Mac. Foldy captures the built-in display, renders the fold, and throws the frame away. Nothing is recorded, written to disk, or sent anywhere — not to me, not to anyone.

What the app reads

Your screen

When the lid starts to move, Foldy takes one snapshot of the built-in display with ScreenCaptureKit and renders the fold over it. That frame stays in memory on your Mac and is discarded as soon as the effect ends. This is why macOS asks for Screen Recording permission: the name is Apple's, and it is the only permission that allows any screen capture at all. Refuse it and Foldy still works — it folds your wallpaper instead.

The lid angle

Read from the sensor behind your hinge, at 125 readings a second. It is a number in degrees. It is used to draw the current frame and then forgotten.

Your settings

Which glass, how strong, whether the click is on — kept in your Mac's own preferences, alongside every other app's.

What leaves your Mac

Two things, both about your licence, neither about your screen.

Checking your licence

On first run and at each launch, Foldy asks whether your key is still valid. For a bought licence that request goes to Polar, who issued it; it contains your licence key, a label for this Mac (its computer name) so the three-Mac limit can be counted, and nothing else. For a licence I gave you by hand, the same check goes to foldy.fun instead, and carries your key and a random identifier for this Mac.

If the check cannot be made — you are offline, or the service is down — Foldy keeps working for up to 14 days on the last successful answer. It does not lock you out because of a bad connection.

Crash reports

None. Foldy has no analytics, no telemetry, no crash reporter and no advertising or tracking identifiers of any kind. It makes no network request other than the licence check above.

What the website stores

When you buy Foldy, Polar takes the payment and is the merchant of record. They handle your card and your email; I never see card details. Their privacy policy covers that part: polar.sh/legal/privacy.

This site then keeps a small record so it can show you your key and your Bubble Translate code: your order id, your email address, your licence key and the promo code assigned to you. That is all. It is used to serve that page and to help you if you write in — never for marketing, and never sold or shared.

The site itself sets no cookies and runs no analytics. There is nothing to consent to because nothing is tracked.

Who else is involved

No one else. There is no mailing list, no ad network and no third-party script on any page of this site.

How long it is kept, and getting rid of it

Purchase records are kept while your licence is valid, because that is what lets me reissue a key you have lost. Ask and I will delete your record, or tell you everything held about you — write to hey@foldy.fun and you will hear back within a few days. If you are in the UK or the EU, this is your right under the GDPR; you are welcome to it wherever you live.

Children

Foldy is not directed at children under 13, and collects nothing that would identify one.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the date above changes and the old version stays in the site's git history.

Who I am

Foldy is made and sold by an independent developer. Questions about any of this — including "do you really not upload my screen?" — go to hey@foldy.fun.
